What you will experience
On this tour you will have an opportunity to discover the origins of the famous wine that was long considered as an America’s only native wine. We will take you to the Kastela region near Split where you will taste domestic wines and hear the story about grape Crljenak Kastelaski.
Explore the Zinfandel’s roots and visit 2 wine cellars dating back in 18th and 19th century.
Zinfandel’s story
Famous American wine known as a „heritage wine“ ruled as California’s signature red until Mike Grgich, Croatian immigrant and California’s famous wine-maker didn’t discover the taste of Croatia in this renowned wine. A real wine lovers have been wondering about the origins of the grapes for centuries. After many researches among Dalmatian vineyards and DNA profiling they finally established Zindfandel’s roots. Scientists collected plenty of samples from vineyards and discovered a perfect DNA match. The most important red wine in Dalmatia, Plavac Mali has the same roots as Italian version Primitivo and Californian Zinfandel. The find took place in Dalmatian region Kastela, near second largest Croatian town – Split.

Wear some comfortable clothes and shoes.
There is an opportunity to buy bottles of wine in the cellar. If you plan to buy it please prepare cash (each bottle 20€/150 KN) packed in a luxury wooden box.
